How do I pay for an abortion?
Figuring out how to pay for an abortion is certainly an added stress, but there are a lot of resources available to people in California and Nevada seeking an abortion. In many cases, if you already have private insurance, abortion services will be fully or partly covered by your existing insurance.
Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal is a state-administered health insurance for low income residents of California. It covers abortion care and all related visits, as well as other reproductive health care, at no cost to you. If you are already on Medi-Cal, provide your clinic with that information when they ask about your insurance.
If you aren't currently on Medi-Cal, you may be temporarily eligible even if you have income. Apply on CoveredCalifornia's Medi-Cal for Pregnancy page.
Abortion Funds
Abortion funds are organizations that directly support people seeking abortions. They are often non-profit or volunteer run.
Some funds provide money for abortion procedures. Others help arrange travel, childcare, food, and supplies. Some funds specialize in helping people from specific kinds of backgrounds or living in certain places.
You can often get funding from more than one fund. They work together to create interlocking communities of support when people needs access to reproductive health care. They also work directly with abortion providers to help get services covered for every patient.

Nevada Medicaid
As of 2024, Nevada Medicaid is required to fund "medically neccessary" abortions throughout the state. The includes pregnancies from rape, incest, and to protect the life of the pregnant person, as determined by a medical professional. We will work on learning more about how this is being implemented and update here when we know.
